In the first phase of the project, Hyundai Steel will allocate 22 billion won (US$15 million) to establish an advanced scrap recycling facility in south Gyeonggi-do. This stage includes the installation of shredders, as well as crushing, sorting and cleaning systems. The company intends to recycle scrap into high-quality scrap with the help of a specialized operator and will expand the company with additional shredders and recycling lines, depending on the results of its activities. Construction is scheduled for the first half of 2027, and full operation is scheduled for 2028.
In addition to producing crushed scrap, Hyundai Steel is also working on new technologies to recycle ordinary scrap into higher-quality material. The pilot plant for sorting and processing, installed at the Pohang plant in 2024, is already operating with the support of ongoing in-house research and development. The company also plans to expand this research by applying for a national project in 2026.
These investments are consistent with Hyundai Steel's medium- and long-term carbon-neutral strategy, which includes the gradual relocation of electric steelmaking and blast furnaces towards additional low-carbon industries. The company is also exploring hydrogen technologies as part of its plan to achieve zero emissions by 2050.
