According to local media reports, Algeria transported the first shipment of iron ore extracted from the Gara Jebilet mine in Tindouf province, marking a key milestone in the country's long-planned mineral export strategy.
The initial shipment of about 1,450 tons of iron ore from the mine of the Algerian state-owned Feraal enterprise was moved from the mine and sent to processing and industrial centers in Beshar for initial processing before being transported to the complex of the Algerian steel producer Tosyalı Algerie in Betiua, Oran.
The cargo is being shipped via the strategic Beshar-Tinduf-Gara-Jebilet railway, an almost 950-kilometer highway designed to connect the vast mine with northern industrial centers and export routes. The railway has entered testing and operational runs, representing a critical logistical artery for heavy mining cargo.
Industrial importance and export prospects
The Gara Jebilet deposit is one of the largest iron ore reserves in the world, with estimated reserves of billions of metric tons, and is part of Algeria's strategy to diversify its economy beyond hydrocarbons.
Once fully operational, the mine and rail link are expected to support significant ore flows to domestic processing plants, strengthen local steel production capacities, and open up export opportunities through Mediterranean ports.
