Delivery delays have not affected Tata Steel UK's Port Talbot EAF project

Задержки поставок не повлияли на проект ЭДП Tata Steel UK в Порт-Талботе

The delivery of a large electric arc furnace to Tata Steel UK's Port Talbot plant in Wales has been delayed due to rising transport costs linked to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, although the overall project schedule remains unchanged, according to media reports.

The company said that despite delays in the transport of key equipment, its £1.3 billion site refurbishment program remains on schedule. The remaining phases of construction and installation are ongoing, keeping the project on schedule following the shutdown of the coal-fired blast furnaces some 18 months ago. The delay is expected to last several weeks, although deliveries are still expected in the summer as planned.

Equipment supply and logistics issues

The chipboard, which is expected to have an annual production capacity of about 3.2 million tonnes, is supplied by Italian manufacturer Tenova. Some critical sections of the furnace are manufactured in China, which has been identified as the only location capable of producing certain components needed for this type of installation.

Shipping costs have risen sharply in recent weeks due to higher fuel prices and disruptions to key shipping routes. As a result, ships carrying EAF components are being diverted from the Red Sea and Suez Canal due to security threats, including ongoing concerns about regional instability, piracy and attacks on shipping. The alternative route via the Cape of Good Hope significantly increases transit times and contributes to higher shipping costs.

Wider concerns over supply chain risk

Tata Steel said the reliance on non-European components reflects technological limitations while more than 10,000 tonnes of steel for the project is sourced domestically in the UK. The UK government has introduced several new measures to protect local steel producers, as recently reported by SteelOrbis.

However, the disruptions highlight ongoing concerns about the UK steel sector's exposure to global supply chain risks, as well as rising energy prices linked to geopolitical instability.
