India's Jindal Steel limited (JSL) has successfully deployed syngas (syngas) derived from domestically sourced coal at multiple stages of its steel operations, the company said in a statement on Monday, April 6.
JSL has since become the first company in the world to use coal gasification technology on such a scale in the steel industry, it said in a statement.
The company said it has set up India's first coal gasification-based direct reduction iron (DRI) plant, which uses syngas to produce pig iron.
The company has now expanded the use of syngas in galvanizing and color coating furnaces - a first for the steel sector globally - and has also begun injecting syngas into the blast furnace to reduce dependence on imported coking coal and reduce carbon emissions by metric ton of steel produced.
Syngas from domestic coal can replace imported methanol, ammonia, ammonium nitrate and liquefied natural gas (LNG), and this coal gasification combined with carbon capture technology will help the company meet Carbon Boundary Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) requirements in export markets, JSL said.
