Tata Steel UK has announced that it has received funding from the Welsh Government for a joint project aimed at developing the next generation of wind turbine towers using low-emission steel solutions.
Supporting the transition to EAF steel production
The project aims to accelerate the design and production processes of wind turbine towers while assessing the role of low-emission steel in enabling more sustainable production. Using strip steel rather than plate is expected to improve manufacturing efficiency and scalability.
As Tata Steel UK moves towards electric arc furnace production, the project aligns with its wider strategy to develop and commercialize greener steel solutions. If successful, this initiative could support the future industrial deployment of low-emission steel products.
With offshore wind expected to play a central role in the UK's energy transition, developing scalable and sustainable tower solutions is becoming increasingly important.
Positioning Wales as a green manufacturing hub steel
According to Sumitesh Das, director and board member of Tata Steel Research and Innovation limited, the initiative is expected to create new business opportunities related to low-emission steel production in Port Talbot.
