India's iron ore imports fell 11% on April 26

Импорт железной руды в Индию упал на 11% 26 апреля

India's iron ore (including pellets) imports stood at about 0.98 million tonnes in April 2026, down 11 percent from 1.11 million tonnes in March but up significantly from 0.38 million tonnes in April 2025, according to BigMint data. The total included 0.93 million tonnes of fine and lump iron ore and 0.05 million tonnes of pellets, indicating that the bulk of the inflow continued to be ore, while pellet imports remained minimal. By comparison, fines and lump iron ore accounted for the entire 1.11 million tonnes imported in March, while pellet imports were nil.

The resumption of pellet imports (mainly from Oman) in April after a month-long break suggests a partial stabilization of supply routes from the Middle East. However, overall import availability has fallen sharply, with pellet imports falling to just 0.05 million tonnes in March-April 2026 from 0.35 million tonnes in January-February.

Brazil and Malaysia dominate supply structure

Malaysia and Brazil have become leading exporters during the month, providing 0.34 million tons and 0.33 million tons. m respectively. South Africa follows with 0.15 million tonnes. The supply trend reflects the continued diversification of supply sources, with a steady flow of supplies from both Southeast Asia and the Atlantic Basin. Most of the supplies were sent to plants on the west coast.

JSW Group Leads in Import Activity

Among buyers, JSW Steel dominates imports with 0.79 million tonnes, accounting for the bulk of the total. JSW Minerals is next with 0.15 million tonnes while the remaining volumes have been imported by other players. This concentration underscores the strong purchasing power of integrated steel producers.

On the logistics front, Jaigad port handled the highest import volumes in April at around 0.51 million tonnes. The dominance of West Coast ports reflects their proximity to key steel production hubs and ease of cargo handling for bulk imports.

Market scenario

  • Domestic ore availability improves following EU extension:Most domestic miners, plus a few integrated ones steelmakers received updated environmental clearances (EC) in April, improving the availability of ore in the domestic market. Regular auction flows and improved local supplies have reduced dependence on imported
