Japan's domestic consumption of steel products totaled 3.91 million metric tons in April this year, up 0.2 percent from the previous month and up 8.2 percent year on year, according to data released by the Japan Iron and Steel Association (JISF). However, in the first four months of 2026, the country's domestic steel consumption increased by 5.7 percent year on year to 15.01 million tons.
In the first four months of this year, consumption of steel products in the Japanese construction sector increased by 3.2 percent to 2.79 million tons, while consumption of steel products in the Japanese automobile sector amounted to 3.84 million tons, an increase of 5.8. percent, same as on an annualized basis. During the reporting period, Japan's shipbuilding industry consumed 941,656 tons of steel products, up 3.1 percent year-on-year.
