The Russian steel company Severstal has announced the completion of a series of major equipment repairs at the converter steel plant of its Cherepovets Metallurgical Plant (CHERMK), taking advantage of the planned shutdown of converter No. 2 to modernize several adjacent units.
The project, worth 1.3 billion rubles ($15.3 million), included the replacement of the upper section of the converter, boiler caisson and blower rotor, as well as the repair of continuous casting machines for blanks No. 1 and 4, ladle furnace No. 2 and metal finishing unit No. 3. The work concerned the installation of steel ladles, cooling and slab pumping systems, as well as repair of water-cooled equipment, railway infrastructure and lubrication systems.
According to Severstal, the upgraded equipment provides about 90% of the company's steel production. Evgeny Vinogradov, CEO of Severstal's Russian division of Steel and Resource Assets, said that the overhaul will improve equipment reliability, working conditions and gas purification efficiency, as well as support environmental compliance, consistent product quality and the company's competitiveness.
