Libya-based Tosyalı SULB, a joint venture created by Turkish steel producer Tosyalı Holding and the Libyan United Steel Company for Ferrous Metallurgy (SULB), plans to attract about $2.5 billion in investment in its direct iron recovery (DRI) project near Benghazi, Libya, with expected commercial production to begin in the near future 2028.
Once all the stages are completed, it is planned that the annual capacity of the DRI production complex will be about 8.1 million tons.
The capacity of the first stage will be 2.7 million tons. тонн
At the first stage of the Tosyalı SULB Libya DRI project, it is planned that the annual production capacity will be about 2.7 million tons. Work has already been completed on the organization of the supply of natural gas required for the first stage, while a special power plant is also being developed that will provide a significant portion of the electricity of the requirement complex.
In total, the project includes three DRI production plants with a total capacity of 8.1 million tons per year.
It is expected that the use of DRI technology on natural gas will allow the company to produce cast iron with lower carbon dioxide emissions compared to traditional production in coal-based blast furnaces, while providing the potential for wider use of hydrogen in the future.
About 90% of the production is focused on экспорт
Ahmed Gadallah, Chairman of the Board of Tosyalı SULB, said that about 90 percent of the project's products are expected to be exported, with international markets, including Europe, among its targets. The complex is also expected to produce fittings and steel pipes for the Libyan domestic market.
The Mediterranean location of the project is expected to provide supplies to the markets of Europe and Africa.
