Germany’s National Steel Summit will be held on November 16, 2026, at Salzgitter AG’s Information Center in Salzgitter. Government officials, steelmakers, trade unions, industry associations and academics will discuss the sector’s competitiveness, climate-neutral production and employment.
Key topics will include competitive energy prices for energy-intensive businesses and the development of markets for low-emission steel. German steelmakers face high energy costs, geopolitical tensions, trade conflicts, global overcapacity and intensifying international competition. At the same time, the sector is investing heavily in new production processes and climate-friendly infrastructure.
Participants will discuss how Germany can move toward climate-neutral steelmaking while maintaining competitiveness, industrial production and jobs. Steel is strategically important to transport, infrastructure, housing, defense, the energy transition and mechanical engineering.
Ahead of the summit, IG Metall representatives at thyssenkrupp Steel Europe called for affordable energy, stronger demand for low-emission steel and protection against unfair imports. The union also urged internationally competitive energy prices and reliable conditions for expanding the use of climate-neutral hydrogen.
At the November 16 meeting, Germany’s steel-producing states, IG Metall and the German Steel Federation (WV Stahl) are set to discuss the political and economic conditions needed to maintain domestic production and value creation. The previous steel summit was held at the Federal Chancellery on November 6, 2025, and hosted by Chancellor Friedrich Merz. Participants then focused on foreign trade, energy and competitiveness.
