Australia accounted for 54% of India’s coking coal imports in 2025, down from 73% in 2019. India’s Ministry of Steel presented the figures to a parliamentary committee on Thursday, November 5.
Imports meet about 90% of the coking coal demand from India’s blast furnace operators. The country’s steel sector imported 58 million tonnes of coking coal in fiscal year 2024–25, up from 57 million tonnes a year earlier.
Russia’s share of imports rose from 0.62% to 8.15%, while the US share increased from 8% to 17%. Mozambique’s share grew from 4% to 7.31%, and Indonesia’s from 2.46% to 4%, the ministry said.
According to the ministry, Australia supplies more than half of coking coal traded internationally, supported by its large high-quality reserves, stable mining sector and efficient logistics. Export capacity in the US, Canada, Russia and Mozambique is smaller and more volatile.
