American technology giant Google has announced a partnership with Swedish environmentally friendly steel manufacturer Stegra to support the launch of the company's large-scale steel mill in Boden, Sweden. The company will run on environmentally friendly hydrogen and will produce almost no harmful emissions.
The Stegra plant plans to use renewable electricity to produce environmentally friendly hydrogen, which will then be used to process iron ore instead of coal. According to Stegra, such a process can reduce emissions by up to 95% compared to steel smelting in conventional blast furnaces.
Google will receive certificates related to сталью
According to the agreement, Google will receive Environmental Performance Certificates (EACs) related to the production of up to 91,000 tons of steel during the first year of operation of Stegra. The company believes that such certificates are designed to stimulate demand for low-emission materials and support the financing and scaling of new decarbonization technologies.
The technology company said the increased use of low-carbon building materials could reduce atmospheric carbon emissions in its data center infrastructure by up to 40%. In 2025, Google used low-carbon concrete, steel, or a combination of the two in more than 20 construction projects. The company is also involved in initiatives such as "Sustainable Steel," a platform to support customer demand for low—emission steel and other building materials.
