Latin America has a huge potential for steel demand

The World Steel Association states that Latin America offers "huge and unused" opportunities for the steel market. The demand potential is based on the need for investment in infrastructure, population growth and urbanization.

These factors create a “very positive picture” for the metallurgical industry of the region for the next 5 to 15 years. The demand potential is especially large in Mexico and Brazil, where there are cities that "quickly grow and need to invest significant amounts."
Rio de Janeiro is currently preparing for the 2016 olympic Games. The level of investment in infrastructure development is currently crucial not only for the needs of the olympic Games. The demand for steel in the region will be stimulated, in particular, investments in housing construction, water and energy infrastructures, as well as growing consumer demand for industrial goods.

One of the important issues that arises in the Latin American sector, refers to unscrupulous trade practice or dumping from other steel producers, and China is noted as the main culprit. The region has efforts to combat this practice at the national level by introducing anti -dumping duties and tightening trade laws.

In Mexico in recent months, numerous investigations have been launched against Chinese imports. It is planned to introduce strict import rules in relation to unscrupulous trade practice in the country and subsidies proposed by the Chinese government to its manufacturers, which impede the development of growth in Latin America.
