According to the Italian printed publication ANSA, Italian inability to solve the medical and environmental problems in Taranto created by the Ilva metallurgical plant, led to the beginning of the trial at the initiative of the European Commission (EC).
The Commissioner of the EC on environmental issues, Mr. Yanez Potonchik said that "the Italian authorities had enough time to ensure the fulfillment of the requirements of European standards for emissions in Taranto."
What is happening with Ilva today is a clear example of inappropriate measures to protect people and the environment, the Tonchik emphasized.
Sending an official notification to the Italian government, the EC began a thorough investigation of the charges. Italy was given two months to the response of the charges of several citizens and public organizations of the city of Taranto.
Ilva is the largest metallurgical enterprise in the south of Italy that provides employment of more than 20 thousand people and has been in the center of corruption and environmental scandals for the past two years. Belongs to the Riva family.
The European Commission began the judicial persecution of Italy for the inability to reduce emissions at the Ilva Mining Road Controller
