Steel production in China exceeded 1 billion tonnes for the first time in 2020

In 2020, pig iron production in China amounted to about 885.5 billion tons, and steel production - about 1 billion tons, up 4.3% and 5.2%, respectively, compared to the same period last year. This was the first time in history that China's steel production exceeded 1 billion tonnes.

By 2021, China's pig iron and crude steel production is expected to increase by 2% and 2.8% year on year, respectively, to 900.6 million tonnes and 1.08 billion tonnes, respectively.

Growth in steel demand in 2021 may be more related to manufacturing than construction of real estate and infrastructure.
