Severstal to increase production of rolled metal products for the automotive industry

Severstal has implemented an innovative laser butt-welding machine at the continuous hot-dip galvanizing unit (ANGTs) in the rolling mill of the Cherepovets Steel Works.

The installation allows welding of metal strips without exceeding the thickness of the strip in the joint zone while ensuring equal strength of the weld and the strip body. Thanks to this, it becomes possible to roll welded seams in a temper mill at ANGTs and, as a result, produce and send more suitable products to customers. With an increase in production volumes, the modernization will eliminate the loss of trimmings by more than 1.5 thousand tons per year, as well as reduce costs.

The control of the laser butt-welding machine is fully automated. All information about the assortment that has ever been produced at ANGC is integrated into the software, which eliminates manual labor of operators.
