Global steel production exceeded 1 billion tonnes in the first half of the year

According to Worldsteel (WSA), in June 2021, the total steel production in the countries of the world amounted to 167.9 million tons, which is 11.6% more than in June last year. Metallurgical production continues to demonstrate high growth rates since the beginning of the year.

In total, in the first half of 2021, the global crude steel production reached 1,003.9 billion tons. This is a record high for this period. It is 14.4% higher than global production in January-June 2020 and 8.1% higher than the previous highest result in the first half of 2019.

The average daily production in June amounted to 5.597 million tons globally, which is 0.5% less than in May. However, at the same time in China, it decreased by 2.5% compared to the previous month, and in the countries of the "rest of the world" increased by 2.1% and reached the highest level in history - 2.467 million tons, which is 28% more than a year previously.

In June, 93.88 million tons of steel were smelted in China, which exceeded the figure for the same month last year by 1.5%. These are the lowest growth rates since April 2020. But in the first half of the year as a whole, Chinese companies brought production to 563.3 million tons, which is 11.8% more than in the same period a year earlier.
