MMK opens an electric arc furnace shop in Turkey

Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works (MMK) today launched an electric steelmaking shop with a casting and rolling module at MMK Metalurji in Iskenderun, Turkey. The presentation was attended by the general director of the parent company Pavel Shilyaev.

MMK Metalurji, the Turkish asset of the Russian steel producer, also set a record monthly production of hot-dip galvanized steel at more than 86kt.

Earlier in the summer, MMK Metalurji started hot testing of the electric steel plant at Iskenderun. At the production site, hot tests of technological equipment have been fully completed, which were stopped in 2012 due to the unfavorable economic situation in the Turkish market. The electric steelmaking shop with a casting and rolling module, intended for the production of hot-rolled coils, has resumed operations and is increasing production volumes.

According to General Director Kvasov, two hot-dip galvanizing plants at MMK Metalurji sites in Iskenderun and Istanbul have set another record for the monthly production of hot-dip galvanized steel. In Iskenderun, the production level reached 45.2 thousand tons, and at the Istanbul site - 41.2 thousand tons. “In total, in July the company produced 86.4 thousand tons of finished premium products,” he said, adding that the previous record was set in January this year, when the corresponding production volume was 78.6 thousand tons of hot-dip galvanized steel. goods.

MMK believes that the launch of an electric steel-making shop with a casting and rolling module at Iskenderun should lead to a gradual increase in production at the site. In 2021, total production volumes are planned in the region of 200-260 thousand tons of hot-rolled steel, and the plant is scheduled to reach full capacity in 2022.
