On "Big Challenges", a prototype software was developed to optimize the cutting of Severstal sheet metal

На «Больших вызовах» разработали прототип ПО для оптимизации раскроя листового металла «Северстали»

Participants of the anniversary project shift "Big Challenges" of the All-Russian Educational Center Participants of the anniversary project shift "Big Challenges" of the All-Russian Educational Center "Sirius" presented the OmniCroy project in response to the Severstal case.

According to the results of the defense, our team won and scored the most points among all participants in the field of "Advanced production technologies"!

OmniCroy is a software solution for automated cutting of sheet materials. The use of algorithmic approaches will allow the company to save up to 4,000 tons of metal per year and reduce production costs.

The new approach increases cutting accuracy by 10% – up to 83% compared to conventional methods.

According to calculations, for an enterprise that uses 7,245 tons of metal per year, savings can reach up to 282 million rubles.

The program works on the basis of heuristic and genetic algorithms, including a modified Bottom-Left-Fill (BLF). It also takes into account the key features of production – the joinability of parts, cutting thickness, complex shapes of workpieces – and supports the DXF industry standard for integration with CNC equipment. Additionally, the participants applied metaheuristics, which increases the efficiency of the basic algorithm.

Andrey Baranov, project expert and head of the Severstal Design Center:

"The finished system reduces metal waste during cutting, which directly affects the economic efficiency of production. Severstal considers the project not only as a cost-cutting tool, but also as a replicable solution for similar processes. We are interested in such innovations and are open to cooperation with young engineers."

The task was developed by Severstal experts, together with the support of the Charity Foundation "Road to Home".

Anastasia Baykova, Head of the Path to Success program at the Road to Home Foundation:

"The Path to Success program of our foundation and Severstal's career guidance projects involve schoolchildren in research activities to develop their talents. So, we accompanied a project team of gifted schoolchildren from different regions of Russia at all stages.: Moscow, Ryazan, Novokuznetsk, Astrakhan and Kazan. The participants, who have the skills of 3D modeling and algorithm development, have prepared a product that can bring real benefits to the industry."

The participants developed the MVP system in 24 days, and the full completion of the project will take from 6 to 8 months. The program will then be tested at Severstal and adapted for other industries.

"Big Challenges" is an educational program dedicated to scientific research
