CSN fined for slag disposal practices in Brazil

Brazilian steel and iron ore producer CSN received a fine totaling about $80 million for problems related to the disposal of blast furnace slag. The Federal Public Prosecutor submitted information to the Volta Redonda Civil Court indicating that CSN practices may contribute to environmental pollution and insufficient vegetation restoration.

The case concerns a facility where CSN stores slag from its blast furnaces outdoors, which is prohibited by environmental regulations.
