The UAE government has announced a decision to further protect the domestic market from the possibility of excessive imports at dumping prices.
Accordingly, the government extended the import duty of 10 percent on the import of rebar, rebar in rolls and wire rods until October 12, 2026. Previously, the measure was in effect until October of this year. The import tax on these products was increased from 5 to 10 percent back in 2019 and subsequently extended every year.
This measure has supported the local steel industry in the UAE through cheap imports of basic rolled products, especially from China, and has helped stabilize the domestic supply chain over the years. According to sources, local consumption in the UAE has improved in recent years from low levels of 160,000-180,000 tons to more than 350,000-380,000 tons per month. "They[UAE]have every right to defend their industry, especially from China, especially when their local demand is recovering somewhat," a market source told SteelOrbis.
Products subject to the tariff are subject to the customs codes 72131000, 721320000, 72139100, 72139900, 72141010, 72141020, 72141090, 72142010, 72142020, 72142090, 72143010, 72142020 and 72142090, 72143010 and 72143020.
