This decision was made a few months after the company shut down a factory on the riverbank and laid off 500 people. Cleveland-Cliffs shared a letter with its employees in which it explained that due to "weak demand and insufficient prices for products manufactured at the enterprise," the company was forced to close the idle plant in Stilton. The letter stated the intention of Cleveland-Cliffs to make an official statement on the final closure of the plant on January 13, 2026.
