Siemens Mobility, the rail transport division of German technology group Siemens, has announced a new partnership with Austrian steel company Voestalpine AG to expand the use of carbon green steel in the production of rail vehicles.
According to agreement, approximately one-fifth of the steel supplied in 2025 will be supplied from Voestalpine's Greentec steel, with the possibility of increasing supplies over the next three years.
This purchase builds on the "Green Steel for Trolleys" pilot project launched in 2022 at the global center Siemens Mobility's expertise for trolleys in Graz, where around 3,000 trolleys are produced annually using an increasing share of low-carbon steel.
Integration of green steel into production rails
Voestalpine's Greentec steel is produced at the company's linz plant using a carbon-optimized production route, reducing carbon emissions by 70 percent compared to traditional production steel.
Siemens Mobility already uses low-carbon steel in bogies, locomotives and passenger cars and plans to steadily expand this share across its production lines.
The new supply agreement directly supports Siemens Mobility's sustainability strategy, which aims to achieve a 90 percent reduction in CO₂e emissions across all sites by 2030 and net zero emissions across the entire value chain by 2050.
