U.S. slab imports totaled 335,748 tons in August this year, down 20.8 percent month-over-month and 15.2 percent less than last August, according to preliminary U.S. Commerce Department census data. In value terms, slab imports totaled $186.46 million in August this year, up from $224.81 million in July and $250.3 million in August 2024.
The US imported the most slabs from Brazil in August with 189,893 tonnes, up from 247,713 tonnes in July and 375,569 tonnes in August 2024. Other major sources of imported slabs in August included Mexico with 95,688 metric tons and Japan with 40,955 metric tons.
