According to Austrian plant and equipment supplier Andritz, Tata Steel UK, a subsidiary of Indian steel manufacturer Tata Steel Limited, has commissioned Andritz to supply a state-of-the-art acid recovery unit at the Port Talbot plant in Wales, UK. The plant will play a crucial role in increasing sustainability and supporting the upcoming expansion of the etching line's capacity.
According to the company, the new plant is designed in accordance with the highest standards of environmental efficiency, which ensures a reduction in waste and an increase in resource efficiency. Commissioning is scheduled for the end of 2027, while the cost of the order remains confidential.
High-performance regeneration system
The acid regeneration unit will be able to process up to 6340 liters per hour of waste acid, ensuring maximum reuse of waste acid during the etching process. According to Andritz, the system will maintain high efficiency both at the plant's current etching capacity of 1.2 million tons per year and at the planned expanded capacity of 1.8 million tons per year.
"The new plant will eliminate the need to import huge amounts of acid from abroad and export waste liquids. This is a big step towards decarbonization of our etching operations," said Tata Steel Project Manager Paul Boxer.
