China launches its first near-zero million-ton carbon steel production line

On December 23, China completed its first near-zero carbon steel production line in Zhanjiang City, Guangdong Province with a capacity of one million tons, marking the end of China's reliance on traditional fossil fuels, which is a major breakthrough in the green and low-carbon transformation of the steel industry, as announced by the Department of Ecology and environment of Guangdong Province.

The production line owned by Baowu Steel introduces an advanced hydrogen-based metallurgical electric melting process, replacing traditional coke with hydrogen as the main reducing agent, reducing carbon emissions at source. Meanwhile, it provides the entire melting process in the electric furnace with renewable electricity, reducing carbon dioxide emissions from the energy side.

The steel production line with almost zero carbon content includes a highly efficient, environmentally friendly electric furnace with a capacity of 220 mt, refining facilities and a continuous casting line for single-handle slabs with a diameter of 2150 mm.

Compared with traditional processes, a near-zero carbon steel production line can reduce carbon emissions. emissions by 50-80 percent.
