Oman is advancing plans to establish a green steel production corridor in partnership with Chinese steel company Tsingshan Group, as the Gulf country works to attract sustainable industrial investment and support its economic diversification strategy, according to media reports.
Strategic partnership for the development of "green steel" production
The Oman-Qingshan Green Steel Initiative aims to establish a low-carbon steel production center in Oman. As part of the bilateral cooperation, Qingshan is expected to invest in new facilities and technologies that will use Oman's strategic location and resources to produce environmentally friendly steel for regional and global markets.
Representatives of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry of Oman, the Oman Investment Authority and other government agencies held meetings with representatives of Qingshan during a strategic visit to China. Discussions focused on aligning the initiative with Oman's economic vision for 2040, developing industrial infrastructure, and identifying investment opportunities for the Green Steel project.
Goals of industrial diversification and sustainable development
The Green Steel project supports Oman's broader efforts to diversify its industrial base beyond hydrocarbons, while promoting sustainable, low-emission production. The Omani leadership stressed that the creation of environmentally friendly steel production facilities will help create jobs, transfer technology and increase competitiveness in the global steel sector.
This initiative can help strengthen Oman's position as a regional industrial hub for value-added production. Using Qingshan's expertise and global supply chains, Oman expects to develop steel products that meet the growing demand for environmentally friendly materials in sectors such as construction, infrastructure and manufacturing.
Oman and Qingshan are expected to continue coordinating on site selection, permits, infrastructure investments, and financing structures for the Green Steel project. The partnership is seen as a key element of Oman's long-term industrial strategy and its commitment to green manufacturing.
