Last year, the apparent steel consumption in the ASEAN countries increased significantly and amounted to 56 million 400 thousand tons, which is 7.6% more than in 2011. This was reported on the basis of preliminary data from the Southeast Institute of Cast iron and SEAISI.
The highest growth in the consumption of metal rolling was recorded in Thailand, where it amounted to more than 13.9% in annual calculus. In second place was Vietnam, which increased its steel appetites by 9.9%, followed by Indonesia (8.8%), then Malaysia and the Philippines, which slightly increased demand for steel by 1.7% and 2.2%, respectively.
Singapore was the only grief for Seaisi, which reduced the purchase of metal products by 4.9% compared to 2011.
The production of steel in the region has not decreased last year, by only 2%, and even increased in the Philippines.
In 2012, the import of metal rolling into the ASEAN countries increased significantly, increasing on average by 8% compared to 2011 and amounting to 36 million 900 thousand tons. More than half of the imports were in the CIS countries and, in particular, to Russia increasing the sales of semi -finished products to ASEAN countries by 1 million tons and Ukraine, which put approximately the same amount of unprocessed steel like Russia. The second half of the import was filled with China, which doubled the sales in the ASEAN of reinforcement and rollery, as well as a hot -rolled thick sheet. Japan was most imported with rolled steel, both hot -rolled and cold -rolled and galvanized.
The export of metal products from the ASEAN region decreased last year by 22% - to 6 million tons. Reducing exports is recorded in all countries, with the exception of Singapore. Exports from Malaysia, according to preliminary estimates, will be reduced by half to 700 thousand tons, Vietnam’s export also fell by 32% in an annual comparison of up to less than one million tons, while in Indonesia a moderate decrease in steel export was recorded by 7% in annual calculus. Meanwhile, exports in Thailand remained at the same level 1 million 200 thousand tons.
