European carmakers call on EU to delay CBAM expansion until 2030

The European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA) has raised concerns about ongoing discussions about extending the scope of the Carbon Boundary Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) to additional refined products, arguing that the proposed scope of the extension and its timing require further consideration.

According to ACEA, it remains unclear why some products were selected for inclusion while others were excluded. While the methodology presented by the European Commission is considered sound in principle, the association said the lack of detailed calculation methods created uncertainty regarding the choice of automotive products covered by the proposal.

ACEA noted that, as a major importer of steel and aluminum products, the automotive industry would be significantly affected by any expansion of the CBAM and stressed that the sector's concerns should be taken into account during the legislative process process.

The association recommends excluding passenger cars

Among its key recommendations, ACEA said that passenger cars should remain outside the scope of the mechanism at this stage, citing the significant administrative burden, compliance costs and implementation challenges associated with their inclusion.
