The smelting of steel in the United States over the last production week of April 2013 decreased by 7.3 percent and amounted to 1 million 866 thousand tons compared with 2 million 14 tons of steel received by the American steel industry a year earlier. This was reported by the AISI Association.
The use of production capacities involved in the metallurgical industry of the United States amounted to 77.9 percent, while in the same period last year this figure was 80.9 percent.
As reported, consumers of the metal distribution from the United States in February 2013 compared with January reduced steel imports by 7 percent, while the supply of metal products in the indicated period amounted to 2 million 441 thousand tons. According to analysts, in 2013, the United States generally import 30 million 300 thousand tons of steel, which is 9 percent less compared to 2012.
As you know, the United States in January 2013, compared with December 2012, increased steel imports by 5 percent, to 2 million 579 thousand tons. In turn, the supply of finished metal products in a given period increased by 18 percent, to 2 million 106 thousand tons.
