Brazilian iron ore and pellet producer Samarco, a 50:50 joint venture between mining company Vale and BHP, said in a statement that it had started receiving wind energy through a strategic partnership with Casa dos Ventos ahead of the original schedule for 2027.
The company receives an average of 45 megawatts of clean electricity from its stake in the Serra do Tigre wind farm, adding wind energy to its electricity supply.
It is expected that the energy generated by the project will cover approximately 30 percent of its electricity needs.
This initiative supports Samarco's strategy to increase predictability of energy costs, enhance energy security, support planned operational growth in the coming years, and further diversify its electricity sources.
During the term of the agreement, the energy supplied by the Serra do Tigre wind farm is expected to avoid an estimated 2.45 million metric tons (mt) of CO₂ emissions.
