More than 60 people died in Sudan during the collapse of a mine at a gold mine in the Darfur region. This is stated in the message of the local authorities.
The collapse of the shafts of the mine occurred on Monday and until today, rescue work is underway at the site of the disaster, says the head of the administration of the North Darfur district.
“I cannot provide the exact number (dead), because no one knows how many people were in the tunnel,” said Harun al -Hasan. However, the press has data on 60 dead gold miners.
Meanwhile, there are no official data on the exact number of victims for the reason that not all prospectors recorded their names before going to the mine.
According to Harun al-Hassan, rescuers who know where to buy skin use manual tools, since equipment can cause further collapse.
The gold mining industry is one of the most highly developed sectors of Sudan.
In February of this year, the Minister of Natural Resources Kamal Abdul-Latif said that the extraction of this valuable metal should grow by 15 tons, and the income from gold export is 8 billion euros. Today, Sudan is the third largest manufacturer of gold in Africa after South Africa and Ghana.
However, the owners of most gold mines of Sudan ignore the safety precautions. So in February last year, 27 gold miners died and five were injured as a result of the collapse of tripod mines east of the city of Talody.
As reported, in Greece they protested against the operation of gold mines.
