According to the Romanian media, General Director of the largest steel company Arselormital Mr. Lakshmi Mittal, during a meeting with Romania President Trajan Basescu, emphasized the importance of a metallurgical plant in Galati (Galati).
"Arcelormittal Galats (former Sidex Galați) is very important for the company and we are determined to remain an integral part of the Romanian industry. At the same time, the economic situation in Europe leaves much to be desired," Mittal said. He informed President Basescu that the European demand for steel fell by 30 percent compared to pre -crisis times.
Mr. Mittal also met with the Romanian Prime Minister Mr. Viktor Pont to discuss the stabilization of the steel industry in Europe and, in particular in Romania. The head of Arselormital expressed the hope that Romania will remain attractive to foreign investments and that the Romanian government will take appropriate measures to ensure competitive energy prices to preserve the country's steel industry.
