The regional government of the Belgian Wallonia is considering the possibility of nationalization of the Arselormital metallurgical plant in liege. Reuters writes about this today.

The conflict between Belgian officials and Arselormital arose after the largest metallurgical company in the world announced plans to reduce the number of an enterprise in liege by 1300 people in connection with a weakening of demand for steel in Europe.

The press secretary of the Minister of Economy Jean-Claude Markurt explained that "such a measure (nationalization-ed.) Exists, the state can take control of a large enterprise that pose a threat to the country's economy as a whole."

The Government of Wallonia had already considered a similar opportunity several months ago. Then a working group was created, led by Prime Minister of Belgium Elio Di Rupo. In addition, according to the press secretary, in January of this year, representatives of the Katar investment fund expressed interest in the Mittal factory.

According to the Minister of Industry of France, Arno Montebur, the authorities can nationalize the entire metallurgical complex on a temporary basis - during the search for the new owner.
