AK Steel has announced that it has officially ceased production at Ashland Works. The plant released its steel on November 11, marking the end of the integrated steel mill.
Ashland Works has been idle for nearly three years, with the exception of one hot-dip galvanizing line with an estimated capacity of around 336,000 tonnes per year. The permanent closure of the coating line is expected to save the company more than $ 40 million a year. In the meantime, the work from the line will be distributed to other AK Steel objects.
Of the 240 employees currently on site, 184 workers will have their final week at the mill, according to a company press release. The remaining 76 maintenance staff will work until December 31, 2019. The decision on the planned closure of the plant by the end of 2019 was communicated to the workers back in January 2019.
In this regard, AK Steel announced that Jaime Vasquez, VP of Finance and Chief Financial Officer, will step down from November this year. In addition, Christopher J. Ross, VP of AK Steel, has been named VP, Treasurer and Interim CFO.
