The European Commission on July 20 proposed to propose to members of the Union to reduce natural gas consumption by 15% from August 1, 2022 to March 31, 2023, in order to cope with the shortage of natural gas and reduce dependence on Russia in the energy sector. . However, this proposal was opposed by many Member States.
Therefore, on July 25, the commission amended the plan. The revised proposal retains voluntary targets for all countries. When formulating mandatory indicators, one should distinguish between the dependence of each country on Russian gas and the state of natural gas reserves. In addition, a long list of exceptions and waivers was provided.
This proposal was finally approved by the EU countries on 26 July.
