Indonesia is set to adopt a tax policy on nickel exports in the third quarter of this year as the authorities seek to boost revenues from exports of more expensive products made locally.
According to Deputy Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investments Septian Hario Seto, the export duty will apply to nickel pig iron (NPI) and ferronickel. However, he declined to reveal details of the planned tax rates, but said the government's decision was based on the price of nickel and the price of coal, which is the main energy source used in nickel production.
The ferronickel and AEP plants currently have an annual capacity of 1.3 million tonnes of nickel, Seto said.
In the meantime, the government is also considering limiting the number of smelters producing APM or ferronickel in order to save nickel ore deposits.
