British-Australian Rio Tinto has resumed operations on the rail line that connects the 43 Mtpa Gudai Darri mine to a port in the Pilbara region of Western Australia (Western Australia) after 20 wagons derailed on 3 September.
The 10-day fence shutdown will make it harder for Rio Tinto to hit its 320-335Mt target for this year as the company is already behind its annual target by at least 10Mt, according to initial shipping data compiled by Argus. .
Rio Tinto shipped 151Mt in January-June, leaving a target of 169-184Mt for July-December. But the company shipped below average in the three weeks to Sept. 3, and the crash is likely to see that trend continue.
According to Rio Tinto, the derailment occurred at the back of the autonomous train and no one was hurt. The firm is investigating the incident and has notified the National Railroad Safety Authority.
