German steelworks Salzgitter has achieved a major automation milestone by implementing the X-Pact Centerline control system from German manufacturer SMS group on its seven-stand hot strip mill at Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH. This project is part of a wider modernization package ordered in 2024, aimed at improving product quality and operational stability.
Automatic strip guiding for higher precision
According to SMS Group, X-Pact Centerline Control uses intelligent industrial cameras for detecting lateral deviations of the strip and automatically correcting them during rolling. This ensures precise strip alignment and minimizes common problems such as double-rolling edges, end tears and cobblestones. The cameras are designed to withstand extreme rolling conditions and provide real-time feedback to help maintain optimal strip position.
Improved efficiency and product quality
By integrating with Salzgitter's mill automation system, the new system reduces the need for manual control, reduces downtime and improves stability rolling. The result of increased productivity is more uniform thickness, smoother surfaces and stable mechanical properties. These improvements directly contribute to improved process reliability and energy efficiency
