SSAB and JTK Power are developing SSAB Zero Green Steel marine Engine Muffler

SSAB и JTK Power разрабатывают глушитель судового двигателя из зеленой стали SSAB Zero
Swedish specialty steel manufacturer SSAB and Finnish engineering company JTK Power have jointly developed the world's first marine engine muffler made from SSAB Zero™ low-emission steel, marking an important milestone in decarbonization efforts in the marine industry.

Reduction of emissions due to recycled steel that does not contain fossil fuels

To develop the silencer, SSAB supplied about four metric tons of SSAB Zero™ steel. The material is produced in an electric arc furnace using recycled steel raw materials and electricity that does not contain fossil fuels.

Compared to conventional hot-rolled steel produced by SSAB in a blast furnace, SSAB Zero™ reduces carbon emissions by up to 77 percent. According to JTK Power, using SSAB Zero™ reduces the overall emissions of the muffler by almost 50 percent compared to a conventional steel muffler.

No changes in production processes are required

SSAB and JTK Power have confirmed that SSAB Zero™ behaves identically to conventional steel during the manufacturing process. The cutting, bending and welding processes did not require any changes, which underlines the suitability of the material for direct replacement on existing production lines.

SSAB Zero™ steel is currently shipped from SSAB facilities in the USA. However, once the construction of the new SSAB electric smelter in Oxelosund is completed by the end of 2026, production facilities in Sweden are expected to expand, reducing supply times and improving logistics for European customers.
